Buried Penis

Buried penis, or hidden penis, occurs more often than most people realize.   This is a very common condition that is corrected with surgery.  It can be congenital or acquired.  Many congenital cases undergo correction in childhood. I’m going to focus my discussion on adults with buried penis syndrome.  

In buried penis syndrome, the shaft and head of the penis are hidden when the penis is viewed from the front or side.  There are several reasons this might occur.  One is a condition in which the shaft skin slides down over the head of the penis. Many of these men, in my experience have had one or two circumcision procedures.  A circumcision in a man with unstable shaft skin will pull more of the skin over the head of the penis and make things worse. The correct maneuver is to pull the skin back and stabilize it to the shaft of the penis to stop the sliding.

Another reason may be an excess of pubic skin or fat. Men who present with buried penis may have gained or lost a significant amount of weight, either through diet and exercise or after weight loss surgery.

If there is fat excess only, it can be treated with liposuction, a procedure that is basic to plastic surgery.  If there is excess skin as well, then the best option is a pubic lift to remove the excess skin along with the fat.  This can be combined with a tummy tuck for men who need both procedures, or it can be performed as a single procedure.
